Is it Safe and Smart to Host a Meeting This Summer in San Diego, California?

This is a hard question to answer in today’s Covid19 climate and as a Meeting Planner we are surely part of the decision-making process.  Although this is a moving target, we are going to share our views on what is safe (or not) to plan for the summer of 2021 in San Diego.

Starting on June 15, 2021 California is likely to fully open its economy, if two criteria are met: first, if Covid vaccination supply is sufficient for Californians 16 years and older who wish to be inoculated; and second if hospitalization rates are stable and low.   Based on data we have seen, it looks like we can hopefully meet these requirements.  As of today, 50% of Californians have received 1 dose.  Although we are not certain what “sufficient supply” means numerically, we have not heard much about a supply shortage in the US.   As far as hospitalization rates, we found this website to be very helpful.  For San Diego County, it looks like we are on a downward trajectory.

These data points lead us to feel good about moving forward with in-person events on or after June 15, 2021. It will be important to follow as many of these event guidelines as possible to be sure we have met our Duty of Care to keep people safe.  There are an additional 2 caveats that we need to be aware of.  At this time, unless testing or vaccination status is verified for all attendees, conventions will likely be capped at 5,000 persons until October 1, 2021. It would be wise to perhaps keep attendance under 5,000 for the rest of this year.  And two, international convention attendees will only be allowed if fully vaccinated.

So, in summary, the data shows a downward trajectory of hospitalization rates and the vaccine appears to be working. Great news! We plan to follow event guidelines to ensure the safety of those involved and keep San Diego (and the nation!) going in the right direction. All that said, we, along with the industry, are ready and prepared to plan for in person events again. We look forward to seeing you in person soon!
